History

The Edmonton Needlecraft Guild was founded by a steering committee in February, 1974. The first organizational meeting was held March 20, 1974 as a “Get Acquainted Night” in the Duggan Community Services Center, Edmonton. There were 28 people in attendance. Some of the goals set out by the steering committee were:

- to work towards developing and maintaining high standards of design, colour and workmanship in all forms of needlecraft;

- to act as a body wherein those involved at all levels of needlecraft can come together to learn more and share their knowledge.

In the fall of 1974 the ENG began meeting at the South West Cultural Center, Edmonton. The first workshop was a class in creativity. The ENG was incorporated as an Alberta based non-profit society in April, 1975. The ENG became a chapter of the Embroiderers’ Association of Canada, Inc which had formed September 27, 1973.

Each year the ENG hosts major and minor workshops for members and non-members using local, national, and international teachers. Since 1977 the ENG and the Calgary Guild of Needle and Fibre Arts have co-hosted a provincial seminar called Olds Fibre Potpourri.
